LHS math teacher finds new outlet in writing
June 1, 2006
Crunching numbers and working with variables hasn't overcome the creative side of Lansing High School math teacher Sarah Wise. She has done some writing - in fact, she's a published author.
Wise had a devotion published in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Coach's Bible, which became available this week on FCAgear.com.
Wise, who sponsors FCA at LHS, saw that the national group was asking for coaches to write a short message to inspire other coaches.
She wrote "Go, Go, Get'em, Get'em, Fight, Fight, Win!" based on the verse Galatians 6:9: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Wise uses a cheer from her high school days to illustrate the verse: "When times get tough and you just cannot do it anymore, listen to God as he is our Coach telling us to GO out into the world, GET'EM prepared for Me, FIGHT until the very end, and we will WIN for Him, when we will reap the harvest in heaven!"
Wise said the opportunity played to her natural interests. She was an athlete in high school and college and has been a coach since she was in high school, she said.
"It was a great opportunity to do sports and God at the same time," Wise said.
This is the first time Wise has been published, she said, though she tries to write when she can.
"Deep down, I do like writing, even though I became a math teacher," she said.
Someday, Wise said, she'd even like to write a book - perhaps about "how life's an adventure" or something that would relate to teaching and coaching.
Wise herself will be embarking on a new adventure this fall. She is leaving LHS for a position at St. Mary's High School, where she will teach advanced math and coach softball and basketball.
Wise, who grew up in Lansing and has taught at LHS for three years, said though it would be hard to leave, she's "ready for a change."
"I think it's time," she said.
