Winning smile, winning photo

November 21, 2007

Entering the Leavenworth County Fall Photo Contest seemed natural for Trish Wills of Tonganoxie.

“I love Leavenworth County in the fall, and so does my son,” Wills said when she submitted her entry of her son, 2-year-old Cooper, smiling in some fallen leaves in Chieftain Park in Tonganoxie.

The photograph found favor with judges and earned Trish Wills first place in this year’s contest, which is sponsored by The Current, Tonganoxie Mirror and Basehor Sentinel.

“We had more than 100 entries,” said John Taylor, editor of the papers. “We had beautiful sunsets, wonderful landscapes, animals, flowers, insects … just a great selection of photos that really did show the beauty of Leavenworth County in the autumn.

“Deciding on a single winner out of the quality entries was a difficult task, but in the end Trish’s photo won out.”

For her efforts, Wills will receive the $100 top prize.

She said she bought her Canon 20D camera when Cooper was about a year old and “really got into taking shots of him.

“I’m not a professional photographer by any means,” Wills said. “But I do like my equipment.”

Cooper’s missing-tooth smile came as a result of an accident this summer that required his front teeth to be pulled, Wills said. “It was the worst day of my life,” she said.

Learning that the photo of her son was a contest winner, though, sparked a different emotion.

“I’m so excited,” Wills said. “What a great day!”
