Lansing boys beat Perry
February 23, 2008
The Lansing High boys ended Perry-Lecompton's hopes of winning a Kaw Valley League championship Friday night as the Lions collected a 63-55 road victory in the regular-season finale.
By beating Perry, LHS helped Basehor-Linwood secure its second straight league title.
By beating Perry, Lansing also improved to 14-6 and ran its winning streak to four.
LHS came out on fire and at one point built a 21-point lead before Perry stormed back and inched within two during the fourth quarter.
"We were just playing out of our minds, making shots we don't normally make," second-year LHS coach Rod Briggs said. "And then they did the same thing."
Starters Cody Rush and Bobby Hauver battled foul trouble for much of the game, but Briggs said the Lions' depth made the difference.
"Our bench was deeper than their bench, and that's what ended up helping us win the game," he said. "Our kids played hard and played well."
Rush led LHS with 15 points, Hauver had 13, Kevin Johnson scored 12, Clayton Hall had eight, Stephen Didde scored six, Curtis Beall had five, Ryan Delich had three and P.J. Sigle added one.
Lansing will be the No. 2 seed in the Class 5A substate tournament next week and likely will meet Bonner Springs in the first round. The official brackets will be set on Saturday. Check back later to lansingcurrent.com to see how the brackets play out.
