LHS girls rout Perry

February 23, 2008

The Lansing High girls continued their red-hot finish to the season with a 59-23 victory at Perry-Lecompton on Friday night.

The victory was Lansing's third in a row and 11th in its last 14 games.

The Lions won despite playing without starting point guard Amy Briggs who was home with the flu. They also played most of the first half without junior forward Alexis Ellis who was in foul trouble.

LHS built a 30-14 lead at halftime, and the Lions put things away quickly in the third quarter as senior Katie Nietzke and junior Brittney Lang swished back-to-back three-pointers.

Fourth-year coach Keith Andrews said he thinks his team is peaking at the right time.

"The shooting's coming around, inside play is getting better and the kids are playing pretty good defense," he said. "If we can keep it together like we have for another week, we'll be in good shape."

Nietzke and Lang scored a game-high 13 points apiece, Ellis had nine, Christine Cordes and Katelyn Griffen each scored six, Kari Kelly had four, Abbey Lozenski had three and Amanda Darrow and Morgan Chiles chipped in two apiece. Darrow also grabbed eight rebounds.

Lansing closed out the regular season with a 14-6 record. Shawnee Heights knocked off Junction City on Friday night, 34-33, and improved to 14-6, too. A coin-toss on Saturday will determine if Lansing or Heights receives the No. 1 seed in next week's Class 5A substate tournament.
