LHS boys ready for round 3 with BSHS

February 27, 2008

The Lansing High boys entered their Wednesday night Class 5A substate basketball tournament opener riding a four-game winning streak.

The latest win came Friday when LHS knocked off No. 4 Perry, 63-55.

The streak must reach six in order for the Lions to advance to the state tournament, a feat last accomplished in 2003 when they competed in Class 4A.

The first of those games takes place against a familiar opponent: Bonner Springs. The second-seed Lions and seventh-seed Braves tip off at 7 p.m. Wednesday night.

Lansing and Bonner Springs played twice during the regular season, with LHS winning a tough 52-45 contest in the first meeting and rolling to a 57-40 victory in the rematch.

Second-year LHS coach Rod Briggs said he doesn't mind playing the same opponent for a third time.

"We're going to have to play somebody, so I think it's better to play somebody you're familiar with rather than someone you're not familiar with," he said. "It works both ways. It could be a positive or negative, but I think it's good."

Bonner Springs (6-14) knocked LHS out of the substate playoffs last year, but Briggs said history would have no impact on the game.

"We're a whole different team than last year," he said.

With a victory, the Lions (14-6) will advance to the substate finals, to be played Friday at Turner High School against the winner of Wednesday's Schlagle-Seaman game.
