Cubs, Reds to play tribute game in memory of Jake Walkup
July 13, 2008
The Lansing Reds and Lansing Cubs American Legion baseball teams will play a tribute game in memory of Jake Walkup at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lansing High School.
Admission is free, but those attending may make donations to support the Walkup family. A jar will be placed on the counter of the concession stand for donations.
Walkup, 16, was a student at LHS. He played for the Reds this summer and last summer. The year before that he played for the Cubs. He died June 30 in an automobile accident. He would have been a junior at LHS in the fall.
"We're one big baseball family in Lansing, and when somebody needs help (we like to help out)," Cubs coach Michael Smith said. "He's got friends on both teams that he played with. That was a pretty hard week last week with everything going on."
