Army to break ground on new prison

Army officials will play host to a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility at 3:30 p.m. June 16 at Fort Leavenworth.
The event will take place in the vicinity of the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at 1301 USDB Road. In the event of bad weather, the ceremony will be in the foyer of the USDB. The event is open to the public.
Army Provost Marshal General Brig. Gen. Rodney L. Johnson will play host at the ceremony. Participants will include representatives from the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Leavenworth, Army Corps of Engineers, Army Corrections Command and JE Dunn Construction Co.
The Joint Regional Correctional Facility will:
¢ Cost an estimated $150 million for the entire project;
¢ Add about 200 jobs to Fort Leavenworth's military and civilian staff;
¢ Be located west of the USDB;
¢ Have 483 beds; and
¢ Be completed around 2010.
The public can park in the USDB parking lot, which includes handicapped parking, and take a short shuttle ride to the groundbreaking site.
