Today, The Current says goodbye to Lansing.

The newspaper, which began publishing in November 2004, is ceasing publication. The newspaper’s Web site, lansingcurrent.com, will continue to operate, largely with community-supplied content.

Three and a half years, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t a long amount of time. But think of Lansing three years ago: The Main Street System Enhancement Project had not even started. Towne Center was an idea with streets and sewers. The only national chain restaurant in town was Pizza Hut (a Dairy Queen building existed but was not operating). There was no high school auditorium, no new elementary school.

In three years, the city has seen a new police chief, two new City Council members, six new School Board members, a new city clerk and two city finance directors.

New houses have been built. Old houses have been torn down.

State and league champions from Lansing High School have been crowned.

Businesses have opened and closed.

Dear friends have died.

And through it all, The Current has chronicled the changes in the newspaper and online.

In these 178 issues, we’ve been able to shine a light on Lansing’s endearing qualities and, we hope, help correct some of its recurring problems.

Those of us involved with The Current are appreciative of the people we’ve met, the sources we’ve cultivated and the stories we’ve been able to share. We’ll always be thankful for the near-universal acceptance we received from readers.

Ceasing publication of the paper isn’t something we intended to do when we started this venture. There’s way too much capital and personal commitment invested in it to walk away lightly.

In the end, though, we came to the realization that revenue wasn’t sufficient to keep publishing The Current in the manner our readers came to expect. It was better to pull the plug than to put out a substandard newspaper.

We’ll maintain our presence in the community through lansingcurrent.com, and we invite public institutions, businesses, community organizations and residents to continue to submit their press releases, photos and photo captions, calendar items and news briefs to us. Submissions can be sent through the Web site or may be e-mailed to jtaylor@theworldco.info.

The site also will include classified and display advertising.

To our readers, faithful advertisers and contributors, we say, “Thanks.”

And for a last time in print, Goodbye Lansing.

   With our military families working night and day to liberate our society then it is obvious
   that we must all have respect and allegiance to Liberty.

   (:) liberty just gets stranger all the time, in essence the only allowed symbols are the
   mark of that very Special and elevated J.C. incorporated symbol.
