Kansas City, Kan. The Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas will celebrate the ordination of Shawn Tunink, 32, Lansing, as a Catholic priest on Saturday, May 24. The ordination will be at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 409 North 15th Street, Kansas City, Kansas.
Archbishop Joseph Naumann will be the ordaining bishop and celebrant of the ordination Mass.
Tunink will celebrate his first Mass on Sunday, May 25, at the St. Lawrence Catholic Campus Center at Kansas University in Lawrence.
Tunink is a 1995 graduate of Lansing High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from KU in 1999.
Tunink worked as a software engineer at Sprint until he entered the seminary in 2003. He attended Mundelein Seminary in Chicago.
Tunink is the son of Duane and Peggy Tunink. He has one sister, Christine, who is married to Brad Krier, and they have one child, Tanner.
In addition to his family and church, the Boy Scouts have been an influence in Tunink’s life. He has been in scouting for more than 20 years.
“The values of Scouting and the values of the Gospel go hand-in-hand,” said Tunink.
The Eagle Scout has continued to be active in Scouting while in the seminary. During the summers, Tunink has served as chaplain at summer camps and has led Catholic Scouts from all over the nation on backpacking trips in New Mexico.
Tunink serves as a member of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting and on the Chaplain’s Committee and the Religious Emblems Committee. He will serve as the chaplain to the Archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting after ordination.
Tunink’s ordination will bring to 16 the number of men who have been ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas in the past six years.
