At the rural Tonganoxie home of Dorothy Tolman, American goldfinches nibble on thistle seeds in a mesh feeder. Tolman is one of several area residents who dotes on birds during winter months.
The birds that visit the bird feeder and bath in the yard of Myrtle and Leon Coker are a window to the past for Myrtle. The birds remind of her childhood home on a farm razed for the construction of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant.
Lela Morley gazes at her pet parakeet Sunshine. She and her husband have owned birds since before moving to Eudora 35 years ago.
Dylan Lash, left, celebrates with his stepdad, Army Staff Sgt. Chad Pappas, during a yellow-ribbon cutting ceremony.
Jasmine Hill, a fifth-grader at Lansing Intermediate School, has completed a six-month program with the Kansas City Chiefs junior cheerleaders.
Jessie Delinger, Lansing High senior, signed her letter-of-intent Dec. 8 to play volleyball at Coffeyville Community College. Pictured at the signing ceremony are, from left, front row: Merle Delinger, Jessie Delinger and Janette Delinger. Back row: Coffeyville coach Delice Downing and LHS coach Julie Slater.
Birds flitter to various feeders that hang on a wire in front of Dorothy Tolman's home in rural Tonganoxie. This is the first year Tolman has hung her feeders together. She said the numerous feeders seemed to be popular with the birds in her neighborhood.
2006 was a big year for Lansing sports. Six stories stood out from the rest, and they are photographed clockwise from the top. Kyle Buehler won an individual wrestling state championship. The LHS baseball team advanced to the Class 5A state tournament. Lauren Jaqua and two other freshmen qualified for the state cross country meet. Amanda Darrow and the LHS softball team qualified for the state tournament. Rod Briggs was hired as Lansing's new boys basketball coach. Tim Torchio and the Lansing High football advanced to state for the third straight year and the first time in Class 5A.
