The G-Force Jets Senior High All-Star team won the national championship in its division in January at the Nation's Best National Cheerleading Championships. The squad includes girls from Lansing, Lawrence, Jefferson County, Bonner Springs and LeCompton. The team, including Lansing High student Bobbi Walden, is pictured with its national championship trophy. The team is coached by Jimmy Godfrey, assistant coach of the cheer squad at the University of Kansas.
Four Lansing students earned a total of 12 medals in the Missouri Valley Swimming Championships, Feb. 22 - 24, in Lawrence. They are, front row, from left: Hannah Hecht, Matt Holden, Shyann Winkler, and back row, Kurt Weber. Weber, Lansing High sophomore, placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.42), third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.08), third in the 400-yard individual medley (4:39.90), fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.76), fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.74), fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.40) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.53). Hecht, LHS freshman, placed seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (3:03.32). Winkler, Lansing Middle School eighth-grader, placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (27.58), sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.55) and eighth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:37.62). Holden, Lansing Elementary School student, placed seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:39.97).
Capt. Aaron Cornett, 1996 Lansing High School graduate, distributes wooden toys to Iraqi children while on a routine presence patrol in Samarra, Iraq. Cornett is part of an 11-man military advisory team assigned to train and mentor the 4-1-4 Iraqi Army Battalion. The toys were donated by a church in Denver, and the effort was organized by Cornett's sister, Misty, a 1994 LHS graduate. Cornett was deployed in May 2007 and will return this April. He lives in Lansing with his wife Jenni and daughter Millie, 9, and he is the son of Terry and Becky Cornett, Lansing.
KC Wolf, above, mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs, welcomes students of Lansing Intermediate School into the auditorium Friday, Feb. 29. In conjunction with Dr. Seuss' birthday, LIS kicked off state assessment tests by inviting KC Wolf to the school to give a motivational speech.
